What to do with those Garden Pests

Slugs are Destructive

If you have a flower or a vegetable garden on your property, slugs will eat your plants and reduce your crop yield. They’re particularly hard on leafy vegetables.

If you need to treat be sure to use non-toxic slug pellets, or try beer traps placed every 3′. Check out the link below to learn how to make your own Beer Traps to catch your slugs.

Did you know Firefly Larvae eat Slugs?

Firefly larvae are predatory hunters and are beneficial to the garden. They live on the ground and under bark. Among their favorite foods are snails and slugs. In fact, firefly larvae have even been seen following their victim’s slime trail, hoping for a tasty treat.

What about Snails?

While slugs and snails will bring both drawbacks and benefits to your garden, under the right conditions, snails bring many more benefits to your garden than drawbacks. Check out the article below to see the role snails can play in your garden’s ecosystem.

Less Lawn & More Life

Christine Gregory of Channel 8 visited the Broccolo Garden Center to report about pollinator plants and creating no-mow meadows. The easiest way to start is to replace sections of lawn with the right tree or plant that are currently too hot, too wet or too shady.

Plant of the Week

Spigelia, also called Indian Pink, is a native woodland plant perfect for shade or part-shade gardens. The summer flowers attract hummingbirds! You can order online and pick up at our garden center.

Landscape Project

We love seeing our Garden Center’s customers installations. Here is Heather purchasing and then planting at the Inn On Broadway in time to please all the Jazz Fest visitors! Great job, Heather, on combining those gorgeous eye-popping colors.
