Pruning – HELP… How do I do it?

Spring Pruning Standards:

While dormant before the shrubs are in full bloom; prune thin crossing branches and old thick stems on large shrubs or small ornamental trees to rejuvenate and encourage healthy new growth.
See video below
Evergreen shrubs become woody from years of shearing. They can be thinned now by hand to remove thick gnarly stubs. This will allow air flow and sunlight to reach inner buds for soft healthy new growth.
Shear old seedheads of summer flowering shrubs such as spirea and potentilla.
Hold off on pruning spring flowering plants shrubs like lilacs until after blooming.
Wait until new buds emerge on roses or hydrangeas and then prune off dead section of stems.

Plant of the Week

A native flowering groundcover starts with a blast of early color in the spring. Then as the flowers fade, it acts as a lush green carpet which lasts even throughout the winter. Creeping Phlox is available in 5 different colors and can find a home in most gardens!
