Weathershield Services

Winter burn on your landscape plants leaves and needles isn’t pretty- new plants are especially susceptible. We offer Weathershield treatment to help protect them.

Winter desiccation injury is a common, unfortunate problem for landscape evergreens. Desiccation injury may occur when water is transpired or “lost” through plant tissue more quickly than it can be absorbed though the roots. This is caused by long dry periods of cold and thaw along with winter winds. Weathershield spray adds a protective waxy coating to the leaves of broadleaf evergreens to help slow the process of transpiration.

The following types of landscape plants are most often susceptible to desiccation:

  • Broadleaf evergreens such as azalea, boxwood, holly and rhododendron.
  • Conifers such as arborvitae, cedar, cypress, juniper and pine.
  • Tender stems such as rose canes and hydrangea
    stems.

We suggest one treatment applied in November, then another during a late winter thaw.

Which Plants Should You Prune?

Avoid common pruning mistakes by following these tips. Cutting back plants at the right time can encourage new growth and flowering, and avoid pruning off precious flower buds.

These plants set their buds on old wood, it’s best to prune them within the few weeks after they bloom:

  • Azaleas and rhododendrons
  • Forsythia
  • Lilacs
  • SOME Hydrangeas. Oakleaf, Endless Summer, Climbing, Mophead and Bigleaf (macrophylla).
  • Mock Orange
  • Flowering Quince
  • Magnolia
  • Viburnum

Resist the urge to cut back these perennials in the fall. These plants should be left until spring as
their roots are more vulnerable to winter damage. Leaving the foliage will protect them:

  • Ladies Mantle
  • Coral Bells
  • Montauk Daisy
  • Hardy Mums
  • Red Hot Poker
  • Lavender
  • Russian sage

These perennials are evergreen and should be left up for winter:

  • Candytuft
  • Heathers
  • Hellebore
  • Hardy Geranium
  • Epimedium
  • Dianthus
  • Hens and chicks
  • Primrose

United Way Event at Broccolo

We had an amazing time hosting Women United at the Broccolo Barn and Garden Center this past month. It was a great time of connecting, growing our community, and even wreath making!

Why Winterize Your Lawn?

1. Winterizing your lawn can help it grow a deeper and stronger root system

2. Aerating the lawn is useful at any time of year, but particularly in fall because it compensates for all the foot traffic the grass endures over the summer and allows nutrients to reach the roots more effectively

3.
You should aim to winterize your lawn in fall, right through November but definitely before the first frosts

Winterizing your lawn is necessary to maintain its health and longevity. It’s not just about surviving the winter, but also about preparing your lawn for a lush and healthy spring.
