Connecting Community and Nature
Kyra L. Stephenson is the Nature Based Learning Coach at Anna Murray-Douglass Academy RCSD school No. 12.
Kyra received a grant from the Center for Youth to create an outdoor classroom. Kyra was the recipient in the Individual category of Environmental Innovation Award sponsored by the Seneca Park Zoo Society. She connected with Broccolo, the business category award recipient and together we created a plan for students to plant native pollinator and bird attracting plants. These gardens are part of the curriculum and students will be immersed in nature when utilizing the outdoor classroom for any subject matter.
The Frederick Douglass Library is attached to school 12 and students look out
from classrooms and view this green roof habitat
designed and installed by Broccolo four years ago.
This photo is from roof looking down at side gardens and murals for school 12.

We’re witnessing a shift in climate dynamics that brings not just water but a flood of challenges and opportunities for adaptation and resilience. Today, we delve into the increasingly pressing issue of changing rainfall patterns and their impact on our communities, infrastructure, and the environment.  General Manager, Jessica DeMasio sat on a panel at WXXI to discuss these dynamics.  Take a look! Broccolo Plant of the Week
(For the second time this year – because yes, they are that awesome!)
This compact shrub is unavailable at most garden centers unless they specialize in native plants. New Jersey Tea is a prolific flowering plant that attracts a variety of pollinators, especially native bees
and hummingbirds. The seeds are a food source for birds, and the leaves can be used for tea.
