The Salsa Garden

  • Tomatoes such as Beefsteak and Roma (2 plants)
  • Sweet Bell Peppers (2 plants)
  • Hot Peppers such as Hungarian Wax, Habanero and Jalapeno (2 plants)
  • Chives and Onions (2 of each plant)
  • Garlic (3 bulbs)
  • Cilantro (1 plant)
  • Basil (1 plant)

Salsa Recipe: ————

Coarsely chop all of the ingredients and add to a food processor and pulse to desired consistency You can cook all of your vegetables in the oven prior to this step if you prefer that slow roasted flavor. Ingredients to add from the store include fresh lime juice, cumin, salt/pepper.

DIY for this recipe garlic is available to purchase at farmstands and grocers everywhere but they are easy to grow yourself! Garlic cloves can be planted in your garden in the fall for harvest the following season.

Pesto Recipe: ————

Make Pesto using your favorite herbs. The most common is basil pesto that can be used in many ways from a bread dip to tossing with pasta. Simply blend pine nuts, lemon juice, garlic, salt/pepper in a food processer. Add a big handful of basil and then stream in your olive oil. Adding some parmesan cheese brings this recipe up a notch as well!

Another way to use your fresh herbs is by steeping in hot water to make your favorite herbal tea.

The Classic Italian Garden

Italy is said to have some of the best cuisine in the world and at the heart of that cuisine are their fresh herbs and vegetables. Have your own taste of Italy right in your backyard! Plants to include:

 

  • San marzano and Roma Tomatoes
  • Basil

  • Italian parsley
  • Zucchini
  • Eggplant

Marinara Sauce Recipe: ————

Saute onion and garlic in olive oil. Add your tomatoes (chopped) and let simmer 25 minutes. Add herbs that you like including basil, oregano and parsley with salt/pepper and a little honey or sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes. You can puree or leave it chunky. Serve over pasta and be generous with the grated
parmesan cheese!

The Salad Garden

Grow your own gourmet-quality greens and veggies with Broccolo’s specialized salad garden. You can’t get a salad any fresher then by picking it yourself just before you eat it. Plant options:

  • A variety of Leaf Lettuces
  • Romaine Lettuce
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Nasturtium

Simple Salad with Lemon Dressing: ————

Wash and dry all of your greens, include a mix of romaine and leafy lettuce. Toss together with your cherry tomatoes and chopped cucumber. Pour a basic yet delicious lemon vinaigrette over top. All you need to do is whisk together olive oil, fresh lemon juice, Dijon mustard, honey with garlic, salt/pepper.

Cocktail Garden

There are several ways that gardening can add to imbibing! Herbs can be used as garnishes as well as creating infused simple syrups:

  • Lavender
  • Cucumbers
