Grandma’s Garden Memories
~ By Laurie ~

A Stroll down memory lane in grandma’s garden:
– In spring, after
the daffodils and forsythia bloom, you will see beautiful white flowers cascading from a large shrub, that is very visible from the road when driving by. What is it?

– It’s the old fashion bridal wreath spirea and underneath it is a ground cover of the little blue forget me nots contrast with the white flowers and fill the beds. As soon as I see the spirea it is my trigger of nostalgia from my mother’s, grandmother’s and great grandma’s gardens.

-Before the spring bulbs fade, I hurry to take photos so I remember where to plant in the fall.

– Next the lilacs bloom and red scarlet quince, mock orange and then the peonies. Every one of these must be cut and the fragrance brought into the house.

Suddenly the entire summer of blooms flash through my brain. Bright red climbing roses and pink shrub roses and white ones and yellow ones; There are so many colors! I remember my Dad pruning and spraying the roses to keep them perfect for Mom. These days, landscape roses are almost carefree and everyone can enjoy them with or without a green thumb.
– Grandma had tall large flowering purple clematis vines drape around the mailbox plus the orange tiger daylillies of summer, black eye susans and daisies then purple coneflowers. There wasn’t any mulch. Just lots of happy assertive plants.
– Great Grandma had large Rose of Sharon in mid August when we visited during summer vacation.
– Soon it’s fall with goldenrod and purple asters and the type of lavender mums that sprawled and came back every year.

– The sugar maple turns orange, the leaves fall and the snow decorates the evergreens. The garden goes back to sleep and we start dreaming of daffodils and crocuses.
