Tour de Farm to visit the Garden Center

The Town of Penfield will feature a bike tour of farms in the Penfield area, stopping at Broccolo’s 43-acre farm and garden center at 2755 Penfield Road.  The tour, sponsored by Penfield Recreation is scheduled for August 22 and will offer three routes for cyclers of all abilities: Family Ride, Leisurely Cruise or the Cycling Express.  Stop by to enjoy our shade, refresh, drink some cold water, enjoy the butterflies, blooming flowers, and bullfrogs croaking in the ponds.

While you’re at the Garden Center, be sure to check out an eagerly anticipated workshop about wild plant edibles…Eat Your Weedies. Stay tuned for more details!

Tips to manage your lawn in heat and drought

  • Don’t cut grass too short. Raise your mower to a minimum 3″ height.
  • Limit the water: Water deeply and infrequently.
  • Sharpen your mower blades to prevent a brown appearance and harm to the plant.
  • Return clippings to the lawn by using a mulching mower. Clippings are beneficial to the lawn, and act as a slow-release fertilizer as they decompose.
  • Don’t fertilize, which stresses lawns during periods of high temperatures.

An insurance policy for your trees and shrubs…

Another thing to monitor in this heat is insect and disease activity in your landscape. Broccolo keeps trees and shrubs healthy and looking good with a Tree and Shrub Program, designed to treat the different insects, bacterial and fungi disease that can attack many species in our area. Keep your landscape investment looking it’s best for a good long time!
